Public lecture Sustainable Finance in Soros Auditorium, SSE Riga
Speaker: Evija Tambaka
In this guest lecture you will learn how sustainability is linked to a company’s performance or, in other words, to the finance world. The recent financial crisis has triggered major investors in capital markets to invest according to sustainability criteria. It has also triggered companies to respond to the interest from stakeholders by reporting on various ESG (environmental, social and governance) issues. In this way companies provide information that investors can use for their investment decisions. The guest lecture will show whether companies that are good corporate citizens have exceptional performance or not and what could influence this.
Monday, March 25th, 12:15-13:45
Public lecture The Legalization of Marijuana in Canada: Policy Challenges in Soros Auditorium, SSE Riga
Speaker: Daniel Weinstock (McGill University)
Canada legalized marijuana in October 2018. It did so not only to lift criminal prohibition on a substance judged to be innocuous, but rather to better regulate what the government considers to be a dangerous substance, especially for the youth of Canada. This talk will address some of the challenges that have been faced in designing an appropriate regulatory apparatus, as well as in (re-)organizing the market in cannabis products. Emphasis will be placed on the efficacy of the means chosen to protect the youth, policy decisions with respect to the licensing of producers, and conflicts of interest that have arisen in the policy-making process.
