Introducing the International Politics Specialization in the BSc Programme
For the past few years, our bachelor students have had the opportunity to choose two out of four specialization courses: Economics, Finance, Retail, and Entrepreneurship. Starting this year, we have exciting news — a fifth specialization has been added in response to global developments: International Politics.
The course is led by Associate Professor Dominik Gerber and Associate Professor Landes Xavier, who will also invite guest lecturers to deliver topical and relevant insights.
At a time when geopolitics shapes global trade, security, and climate policy, understanding the dynamics of International Politics is more crucial than ever.
This specialization equips advanced undergraduate students with the tools to navigate the complex forces influencing businesses, government policies, and international relations. From the rise of China to Europe’s evolving security landscape and the geopolitics of geo-engineering, the course provides essential knowledge on the risks, opportunities, and forces driving today’s global order.
Key topics include:
-
History & Theory: Delve into the legacy of the Cold War and its impact on international relations, viewed through the frameworks of neorealism, liberal institutionalism, and constructivism.
-
Conflict & Power: Understand the causes of wars and the roles state and non-state actors play in shaping peace and conflict.
-
Hot Topics: Learn from distinguished guest lecturers about the geopolitics of China, Ukraine, the Arctic, the Baltic region, global supply chains, semiconductors, and the climate crisis.
BSc programme students take specialization courses in their third and final year, allowing them to tailor their education to their specific interests and future career goals. This personalized approach helps students deepen their expertise in areas that align with their aspirations, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed for their next steps.
