SSE Riga students present their bachelor’s thesis among the world's top undergraduates
The Carroll Round is the world's premier economics research conference for undergraduates. Each Spring, 25 of the brightest undergraduate economics students gather together on the historic campus of Georgetown University (Washington, DC) to engage in a weekend of economics discussion. This year two SSE Riga students also took part in the conference and presented their bachelor’s thesis.
As an academic conference, the Carroll Round revolves around the presentation and discussion of original research by undergraduates. Students present their findings in journal-length articles and summarize their project in discussion panels moderated by economics professors and practitioners. Papers focus on a wide variety of the latest topics pertaining to international economics.
“Out of over a hundred research papers submitted for consideration, we were among the lucky 25 authors who have been granted with an opportunity to become the participants of the 18th Carroll Round Conference that took place from 11th to 14th of April at Georgetown University,” explains SSE Riga Year 3 students Darya Senkevich and Veranika Khilko.
“We were astonished by the diversity of topics covered at the conference: from research into the corruption trap in Latin America to the issue of gender inequality in China and the effects of job displacement on prescription opiate demand in the US. This event has allowed us to gain exposure to the extremely bright pieces of undergraduate research and learn the theories applied by international academicians. We were honoured to represent SSE Riga and the high standards of education it pursues. Since right now is the time for Year 2 students to choose a topic for their next year’s BSc theses, we highly recommend SSE Rigans to check the areas that the Carroll Round specializes in. Maybe the topic you feel passionate about belongs to one of them?” concludes SSE Riga students.
