Geopolitics is the talk of the town in Brussels, but is EU strategy truly based on a sound geopolitical analysis? Additionally, strategy is not determined by geopolitics alone; the evolving strategies of the US and other powers, along with our understanding of our role in global politics, are equally crucial. What could be the implications for European strategy, including our defense? A geopolitical tour of the world, starting in Ukraine and ending in Taiwan, will reveal the state of the world order and how the EU can safeguard its interests.

About Dr. Sven Biscop

Professor Dr. Sven Biscop, born in Willebroek, Belgium, in 1976, studied political sciences and earned his Ph.D. at Ghent University, where he is currently a professor. He lectures on the grand strategy of the European Union and other major powers, as well as on Belgian foreign and defense policy. Additionally, he serves as the Director of the Europe in the World Programme at the Egmont – Royal Institute for International Relations in Brussels, the think-tank associated with the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Sven is an Associate Member of the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences of Belgium and an Honorary Fellow of the European Security and Defence College (ESDC), an EU agency where he instructs diplomats, military personnel, and officials from all EU Member States. He regularly speaks at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels and at the People’s University of China in Beijing, where he holds the position of Senior Research Fellow.

His latest book, "Grand Strategy in 10 Words - A Guide to Great Power Politics in the 21st Century" (Bristol University Press, 2021), has garnered attention. Sven has been honored with the cross of Officer of the Order of the Crown of the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Decoration of Honour of the Republic of Austria.
