Soros Auditorium

For the fifth consecutive year, FICIL will present the foreign investors’ assessment of the business environment in Latvia, taking a closer look at developments regarding tax system, access to labour and productivity, combating economic and financial crime, quality of higher education and other key factors. FICIL Sentiment Index 2019 report will be presented by SSE Riga Professor Dr. Arnis Sauka.

Arnis Sauka, author of the FICIL Sentiment Index:

“The key aim of the FICIL Sentiment Index study is to foster evidence-based policy decisions for promoting a favourable investment climate and improving overall business ecosystem in Latvia. This is done by summarising the key concerns and suggestions of the main foreign investors in Latvia. Findings of the 5th FICIL Sentiment Index, that will be presented on the 15th of January at SSE Riga, show that currently, foreign investors in Latvia feel comparatively good, and the share of companies, which are planning new investment projects, has increased from 55% in 2018 to 64% this year. Yet investors also highlight number of challenges that hinders Latvia’s ability to compete for new investment, including lack of workforce, worsening of the demographic situation, quality of education and consistently high share of the shadow economy, amongst others. Other important issues for the economy of Latvia, such as forthcoming tax reform, the stability of financial system and quality of human resources in Latvia will also be discussed during the event.”

  • How is Latvia’s economic competitiveness viewed by foreign investors?
  • What progress has been made this year by policymakers and the government?
  • What are the major concerns of the foreign investors in Latvia?
  • Is the current legislative framework promoting investment incentives of the existing and potential businesses in Latvia?

Presentation will be followed by a discussion between policy makers and foreign investors, moderated by journalist Jānis Domburs.
