Speaker: Dr. Rainer Harms, University of Twente, the Netherlands
This session will be all about typical reviewers comments and how to address them. I will share a paper that is work-in-progress, the reviewers’ comments, my reaction, and some generalizations that may be drawn from these reactions. The topic of the paper is about Hypersensitivity and Entrepreneurial Intention. Hypersensitivity is a character trait that reflects the degree to which a person recognizes and processes sensory input. Some persons are particularly sensitive to sensory input. Inspired by the literature on person-environment fit and the literature on the (beneficial) effects of ill-reputed personal conditions for entrepreneurship, we hypothesize about the relationship between highly sensitive persons (HSPs) and entrepreneurial intention. In particular we argue that highly sensitive persons are more sensitive to environmental and social stimuli, and process them more deeply than most other people. They are highly emphatic and able to recognize opportunities. At the same time, they tend to become over-aroused and overwhelmed, leading to high stress levels and avoidance tactics. In this paper, we adopt a person-environment fit approach and the opportunity-recognition process perspective and argue that, in entrepreneurship, HSPs can indeed attend to their own needs and turn their weaknesses into strengths.
