Open Lecture by Alain Lamassoure, French politician and Member of the European Parliament

In his lecture Alain Lamassoure will address these questions:

• Do all Europeans have the same values and are they just European values?
• Does the fact that they have been adopted by international organizations such as the UN and the WTO mean that these values are universal?
• Can values which are questioned in other continents be the cornerstones of the 21st century and, if so, under what conditions? 

Discussion after the lecture will be moderated by Inna Steinbuka, Professor at the University of Latvia and former Head of the EC Representation in Latvia.

Alain Lamassoure graduated from Sciences Po and ENA (National School of Administration). He was advisor to the Court of Auditors, Minister for European Affairs (1993-1995), Minister for the Budget and Government spokesman (1995-1997) and Member of the French Parliament (1986-1995).

He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for the first time in 1989. He returned to the European Parliament in 1999 and has been a MEP ever since. Alain Lamassoure is a former Member of the European Convention. He is currently Vice-President of the EPP French delegation.

Alain Lamassoure chaired the Committee on Budgets (BUDG) (2009-2014) as well as the special committees on Tax Rulings and Other Measures Similar in Nature or Effect (TAX 1 & 2). He was also Rapporteur on the Common Consolidated Corporate Tax Base (CCCTB). He is a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO) and substitute of the Committee on Budgets (BUDG), of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) and of the Special committee on financial crimes, tax evasion and tax avoidance (TAX 3).
