Mini-lecture "SSE Riga Food for Thought": Uncovering Crime and Corruption through Journalism

The third mini-lecture will address challenges of investigative journalism. The lecture will be delivered by Sabīne Sīle-Eglīte, Director of the Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga, who is responsible for the management and programme development at the Centre for over a decade already.

Dada Lyndell who is the alumni of the Intensive Investigative Journalism Programme from Russia will provide a practical insight into investigative journalism. Dada is an award-winning data journalist and currently the ICFJ Fellow with the leading investigative journalist network and the Centre for Media Studies partner organisation - the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

About the lecture "Uncovering Crime and Corruption through Journalism"

In a time of significant upheaval across the world, investigative journalism is needed now more than ever. We are all grappling with the threat posed by disinformation originating from government-sponsored propaganda activity in countries run by authoritarian and populist regimes. Allied to this is a technological development that has accelerated at a phenomenal rate, outstripping the slow and partial progress of maturing, but still fragile, democracies.

Research has found that independent media plays a significant role in improving government accountability and reducing corruption in the country. Quality journalism that exposes genuine instances of corruption and organized crime, also informs the debate in the society and keeps powerful to account. This in turn means that strong media helps ensure that the country is well-managed and it has a stable and healthy business environment.
