In these challenging times for modern organizational life, teams have become an ever-increasing and vital element of any enterprise. The ability to manage teams effectively and create growth and development in teams has become a key skill required by senior and middle managers to succeed. The aim of this course is to promote understanding and knowledge of what critical leadership skills are and how to acquire them, how to lead high-performing teams, and how to create conditions where team members are motivated to accomplish organizational aims.

Hendrik Sebastiaan Drikus Kriek

Prof. Hendrik Sebastiaan Drikus Kriek is Deputy Dean for Pedagogy and Director of Doctoral programmes at the IEDC-Bled School of Management in Bled, Slovenia. He teaches Leadership, Leading High-Performance teams and Organizational Development courses on diverse PhD, MBA and Coaching programmes. He is the author of five books on teams, the most recent being Team Leadership: Theories, Tools and Techniques (KR publishing, 2018), while his next book The Art of Leading Teams is currently in press.

Drikus consults in the field of Organizational Development and has been involved in team development and management education projects as well as lecturing and leadership development programmes for a wide variety of local and international organizations with projects in Slovenia, Russia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Namibia, Botswana, Ghana, Latvia, The Netherlands and Australia.

He studied Clinical Psychology and was awarded MA (Clin Psych) and MBA degrees, both cum laude, from the Rand Afrikaans University and the University of Stellenbosch respectively. Drikus was awarded a Doctorate by the University of Pretoria and is also a graduate of Yale University in the United States. His article on African Change leaders (with Prof. Stella Nkomo) was selected as the Best Paper of 2011 by the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology (one of the top five in the field).

 

Context

Leadership remains one of the buzzwords of modern organizational life and of leaders’ focus. Managing complex problems, initiating and implementing change and accomplishing organizational outputs are key responsibilities for leaders and are distinguishing factors ensuring organisational success.

In addition, the requirement to lead teams effectively has become one of the most critical skills demanded of any leader. In this context it is useful to understand:

  • mindsets determining effective leadership;
  • the value of reflecting on own leadership;
  • key elements of effective teams;
  • conditions for motivating team members;
  • action needed to ensure high performance.

The course offers a broad overview of major team leadership principles, techniques and tools. By absorbing and applying the basic concepts of teams and teamwork, participants will understand the value of how to lead through people.

Who should attend?

The course is open to senior and midlevel team leaders and team managers who want to lead more effectively, to team members who want a better understanding of how teams operate, and to consultants, coaches and trainers involved in facilitating and enhancing effective team development.

Content

The primary aim of this course is to use the experience as an opportunity to enable participants to learn about the process of forming effective teams and how to use teams to facilitate and enhance collaborative work environments and contribute to processes of cultural change. The course will involve participants in a set of hands-on activities showing the process of team development to illustrate the context wherein learning takes place.

  • leading meaningfully.

 

At the end of this course students will be able to:

  • utilize key elements that drive effective team performance;
  • understand the necessary criteria for effective leadership;
  • link individual leadership style with personality and life history;
  • critically assess different development approaches to team leadership;
  • define and identify appropriate mindsets for effective team leadership;
  • apply tools, skills and techniques with regard to reflexive behaviour.
