Geopolitics Unscripted by Jarosław Pietras: Better Europe – The Polish View on Europe's Future

The Stockholm School of Economics in Riga invites you to a public lecture by Jarosław Pietras, visiting professor and former Director General in the General Secretariat of the EU Council of Ministers: "Better Europe – The Polish View on Europe's Future." This event is organised in cooperation with the Embassy of Poland in Latvia.

Drawing on his extensive experience at the heart of European policymaking, including his role as Director General in the General Secretariat of the EU Council of Ministers, Jarosław Pietras will examine how Poland envisions a stronger, more cohesive Europe in the face of shifting geopolitical dynamics. He will explore the challenges and opportunities confronting the EU, offering a Polish perspective.


About the Speaker

Jaroslaw Pietras holds a PhD in Economics (1986) from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Warsaw. He taught at the university from 1980 to 2008, with a sabbatical leave to serve in the Polish Government. He has also taught on a short-term basis at the Business School of the Warsaw University of Technology and at the Krajowa Szkoła Administracji Publicznej (National School of Public Administration) in Warsaw.

Between 1990 and 2006, he held senior positions in successive Polish governments, including Secretary of State for European Affairs and Secretary of State at the Ministry of Finance.

He was a Fulbright Scholar at Duke University, North Carolina, USA (1989/90), a Dekaban-Liddle Foundation Scholar at the University of Glasgow (1992), and an ACE Programme Scholar at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in 1994. He also collaborated with Bruegel, serving as a Member of the Board from 2008 to 2011, and was a Practitioner Fellow at the Sussex European Institute, University of Sussex, UK.

From 2008 to 2020, he served as Director General in the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union.
