Macroeconomics for Journalist with Morten Hansen in 5 Lectures

The Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga invites journalists to a set of five evening classes with Morten Hansen, Head of Economics Department at SSE Riga.
Idea and objective
Journalists are usually educated as journalists but often have to write about or deal with the world of economics. This evening course tries to bring relevant concepts from macroeconomics closer to the participants and to enable them to:
a) Understand the links between economic variables
b) Perform economic analysis and make predictions
c) Communicate economic developments professionally to their audiences
Content
The course will introduce the major economic concepts such as GDP, growth, inflation, exchange rates, trade balance etc. – how they are defined, what they mean, how they interact and how they can be controlled by economic policy.
Format
Lectures based on Latvian data, EU data, European data, world data – in particular taking into account current ‘hot’ issues such as Brexit, Trump and trade wars, currency crisis in Turkey, economic meltdown in Venezuela – but also topics suggested by the participants.
Target group
Journalists/journalism students with an interest in macroeconomics.
