The case based training is developed in order to help managers make executive strategic decisions, re-invent themselves, maximise their potential in order to develop a financially sustainable media enterprise. Experts with experience in management and media will share their knowledge, as well as provide space for participants to share best practice. An added value of the course will be the focus on how to manage a gender friendly newsroom.

The course will run from March 3 to March 7, 2020, offering 12 full scholarships that cover tuition, international travel, accommodation, coffee breaks and lunch.  

Media managers, publishers, editors, journalists in management positions from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Turkey are welcome to apply.

LECTURERS

Course is taught by scholars and practitioners with deep collective experience in the news industry and business training. The focus and main goal of the programme is to bring together many of the strands of the business world and apply them to the rapidly changing media sector.

 

Peter Zashev                                                                      

More than 15 years of experience in executive education as a trainer and program director, Peter also has considerable experience as an international consultant working on projects for the private sector (international business strategy and marketing) and the public sector (international projects with UNCTAD, the EU and GIZ). His cross-cultural skills are enhanced by the fact that he was born in Bulgaria, lived in Russia, works in Finland and lives in Estonia.  With a doctorate in Economics and Business Administration from Hanken School of Economics and extensive network of Nordic companies and business leaders, Dr. Zashev takes his key learnings from the Nordic market into Eastern Europe.       

 

Jakub Parusinski

Chairman of the Board for the Media Development Foundation, former journalist who has written for New Eastern Europe, the Financial Times and the Economist. In 2013-2014 he served as CEO of the Kyiv Post, Ukraine’s leading English-language publication, during which time it became the first Ukrainian recipient of the University of Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism.  Jakub holds degrees in Economics from the University of Gdansk and Political Science from the Central European University. Following an MBA at INSEAD, he worked as a consultant with McKinsey in London in 2015-2018 focusing on digital strategy and transformation.

 

Tom Trewinnard

Tom has ten years’ experience working at the intersection of technology and journalism, leading high-impact international media projects and driving product strategy for collaborative technologies. Formerly Director of Programs at Meedan, Tom led Check Global, a programme dedicated to developing innovative open source tools and training programs for journalists, fact checkers and human rights researchers around the world. Tom is the co-founder of Pop-Up Newsroom, which has led major collaborative reporting initiatives in the UK, US, Mexico, India and Indonesia. Tom is a regular speaker at international conferences and has worked extensively with journalists from the leading newsrooms in Middle East, Europe and Latin America, as well as with citizen journalists from around the world. Tom holds an MBA from the Eller College of Management, University of Arizona and is currently the founder and COO of News lab and media consultancy- FATHM.

 

Olga Rudenko

Olga Rudenko is the deputy chief editor of the Kyiv Post, an English-language newspaper in Kyiv, Ukraine. She reports on various topics and leads a multicultural team of journalists. She started at the Kyiv Post in 2011 as a reporter. She contributed to the newspaper’s coverage of the Ukrainian revolution and Russian aggression that won the Kyiv Post the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism in 2014. She co-founded Lustrum, an online magazine that pioneered explanatory journalism in Ukraine. She is a board member at the Media Development Foundation, a non-profit organization strengthening local journalism in Ukraine. 

 

Galina Timchenko

Galina Timchenko is CEO of  Meduza - most popular media organization in Russia, with a majority of its staff based in Latvia. Meduza is well known for their experimentation with gamification, integrated marketing and other media monetisation tools. Galina was an editor-in-chief for the Lenta.ru news website, which was the most widely referenced news source among Russian-language websites. Galina was sacked when the owner appointed a new editor-in-chief with direct links to the Kremlin. In October 2014, Galina and other former employees of Lenta.ru set up Meduza and moved to Latvia.
